To make Webster’s monumental 1828 dictionary available at a more affordable price, this new edition has been carefully prepared in a proprietary compact format: All of the words, definitions, and examples have been preserved, but the explanations of word origins have been omitted to save space, as has Webster’s lengthy technical introduction. Scripture references have been standardized in modern format, and many abbreviations have been spelled out for greater understanding. Also, for the first time since the book’s original publication, the text has been newly designed and typeset; the clear, sturdy Charter typeface makes the text highly readable in spite of its small size. Noah Webster’s 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language is a work of great importance for modern readers who care about traditional values. The founding documents of the United States of America are contemporary with this 1828 dictionary, as are many other important books and documents of that time. The 1828 dictionary defines the language of these materials in the context of their era and thus becomes a valuable reference tool to enhance understanding. In addition, Noah Webster based his work extensively on the King James Version of the Bible, so that not only the words but also the values of the early nineteenth century are reflected in the definitions. As Webster wrote, “In my view, the Christian religion is the most important and one of the first things in which all children, under a free government ought to be instructed. . . . No truth is more evident to my mind than that the Christian religion must be the basis of any government intended to secure the rights and privileges of a free people.” This new, compact edition is published with the same hope expressed by Webster himself: “I present it to my fellow citizens, not with frigid indifference, but with my ardent wishes for their improvement and their happiness; and for the continued increase of the wealth, the learning, the moral and religious elevation of character, and the glory of my country.”

    Best version
I’ve now purchased all three available versions of this book, first the facsimile hardbound version, then the Kindle version, and recently this compact hardbound version. Of the three, I definitely like this one the most. The facsimile version was not just too big and too heavy for comfortable use. Its type was a bit faint and hard for my aging eyes to read. The Kindle version was easy enough to read, but difficult to search for a specific word I wanted to look up. The free online Web version was easier in that regard, but of course only works when I have Web access. This compact version has been freshly typeset in an easy to read font, plus is small enough and light enough for me to hold without difficulty. The hardbound version is also well bound, and appears likely to last longer than I will. All versions share the virtue of being the most authoritative American dictionary, still in use after almost 200 years, and immune to issues raised by changing cultural values over time. It is particularly good at defining words found in the even older King James Version of the Christian Bible. In both cases, I figure anything still in daily use after more than a century must be important. All it lacks is definitions for new words developed since 1828, for example “photosynthesis.”

    Small Print
It is a dictionary and the print is very small. It has a tremendous amount of information in it. You would definitely want it for your collection or library.

    Good Dictionary ***Update Great Dictionary
I use this when reading things in Old English as it has words dating to early English. Perfect.***I have to add after using this for months it is the best tool for reading. Instead of using google and going down rabbit holes or even Webster online, I don’t waste my time. It take a few seconds and I have my word meaning.

Massive in size but not the font.
Highly recommended for anybody wanting a real dictionary. The size is massive, but it is great quality. My only complaint and the reason for 4 stars is due to the small font. If it was larger it would be perfect.

A Must for In-Depth Bible Study
The sheer volume of the book looked overwhelming at first, but this Dictionary has been unbelievably valuable in my bible study class and is easy to assimilate. I originally thought dictionaries should be kept up to date, but now I realize and have first hand knowledge that knowing all the different connotations words had in the past is extremely useful when translating or understanding historical texts. The meaning of words has frequently changed or become obsolete over time and can make all the difference in understanding what the text is saying depending on when it was written. For example, just think what the word “gay” used to mean back in the day, and what it means today!

This is an invaluable resource for King James bible students seeking full definitions of the obscure words found in the bible text. With reference to the one star review, the original intention of Webster’s work was, as the title suggests, a dictionary of the English language as it was at the time (1828) as opposed to being strictly a dictionary of King James English.Although this says “Compact Edition” on the cover, this single volume is epic in both size and scope.Pros:Extremely comprehensive, this would be the only “King James” English dictionary that you would ever need.Concise and clear definitions.Cons:Large size means the dictionary isn’t particularly portable.Small print size although font used is clear and legible.

Es ist genau, das was ich gewünscht habe. Kann nur weiter empfehlen, für die, die eine durchaus überlegte Englisches Lexikon suchen.

This dictionary is very helpful because I can understand the real meaning of the words when I am traslating something into italian. The fact that is “bible based” is a huge bonus. I don’t mind the size, ’cause it is normal for a dictionary. It is easily readable. It is very helpful where internet is off.

Uhhhhh – HUGE. People are confused about what a dictionary is – its NOT a rule about what words mean, but a snapshot of history about how words are used. IF people would compare the US constitution, based on the definitions in this dictionary, with what many currently erroneously claim it means in today’s English, they would see a stark contrast. Even the courts today rule, NOT on what the original intent was, but of the modern usage of the words in the constitution. This particularly affects the issues around the imaginary concept SEPARATION of church and state. The CONSTITUTION was based on the Christian religion using today’s definitions – but in the language surrounding the constitution, Christianity was assumed and religion meant what we know as denominations today. Using that paradigm makes understanding the writings around the constitution far less confusing. One of the first acts of the new CONGRESS was to place an oredre for enough BIBLES for one to be in each home in America for MORAL direction
