The classic guide to the tongues of elves, dwarves, hobbits, and men—and an examination of the fourteen languages created by J.R.R. Tolkien and spoken throughout his beloved Middle-earth
J.R.R. Tolkien is known worldwide as writer of the fantasy classics The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, among many others. But he was a linguist first and a writer second, and in many ways his stories served as vessels for the many intricate languages he created and that appeared throughout his works.
This beautifully illustrated book will delight fans of Middle-earth with its deep dive into Tolkien-as-linguist, his languages, comprehensive guides to the stark runes and flowing Elvish script he created for writing them, and an English-to-Elvish dictionary for all of the words he invented. A must-have for every Tolkien library!

Great grammar and dictionary
This book is great for understanding the grammar of Tolkien’s languages: sentence structure, verb tense formation, etc.It also has a very nice glossary and dictionary. It also presents the various alphabets (rune equivalents for dwarvish and Tengwar alphabet for elvin languages), but for me it was difficult to follow exactly how to use the alphabets to write my own sentences (hence, 4 rather than 5 stars).

An interesting book
Got it and read it. A lot of interesting facts in this book as well as the languages.

Did you ever want to speak ….
Did you ever want to speak High Elven with a Noldorian accent? or roar out dwarvish? Read this book. Nuff said.

introduction to Elvish
I liked this book. As a newcomer to Elvish and the Middle Earth languages, I found this boook to be very helpful and informative. It has extensive dictionaries and studies of the languages of the Hobbits, Rohirrim, and Rhovannion. I especially liked the chapter “Using Elvish.” The author admits that these rules are ascertained from the various texts and are not necessarily exact. What I wanted was not just a listing of Elvish words, but to know how to write in Elvish myself. This chapter sets you in that direction. As a novice to Tolkein and Elvish, I can’t vouch for the timeliness of the work, but it addressed what I was looking for. I’d recommend it.

Simple. I love languages

I have always had a fascination with languages, and Lord of the Rings in particular. This book is simply written but not so simple that it is boring. It contains details about the various languages that Tolkein created including Elvish, Dwarvish and even some hobbit words! I found this book fun to read and learnt a fair bit from it. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is unsure whether to learn any elvish.

Well there is not much to say. The title reads: The Languages of Tolkiens Middle Earth – A complete guide to all fourteen of the languages Tolkien invented.Well there is this word “complete” wich is absolutely misguiding – “A brief guide” would be quite nearer to the truth!! Even if I assume that there is not much source for most of the languages and Mrs. Noel thought she got it all together to be complete, there should still be a Warning on the book: “A complete guide – but sorry its not much!!!!”Waste of Money!!The Appendices in most of the Tolkien publications and the books themselfes(Hobbit/LOTR/Silmarillion etc.) do almost the same job!! Even the dictionary part of the book is no real help if you are interested in anything else than Quenya! there are Wiki-sites on the internet with more or better organised content!!

Unfortunately, this is a typical book for NERDS, now, I would consider myself a nerd in many ways but a book pretending that the languages INVENTED by Tolkien do actually exist, or rather that there are native speakers of these languages is just stupid.I had hoped for a linguistic approach seeing how Tolkien contructed these languages. Not saying that “the Elves used to use this particular verbal form in the past” …

Just, wow, really, really amazing. If you like elves, Tolkien, or are looking to try and write your own language, this book really does help. It pulls together all the information he left behind and then tries to cover as many of the gaps as it can. A really good book, both in feel (physically) and in reading.
