The Oxford Dictionary of Current English is the most comprehensive paperback dictionary of its kind, providing full and up-to-date coverage of English as it is used today around the world.
The Dictionary offers over 120,000 words, phrases, and definitions, and uses a straightforward writing style that avoids technical language, ensuring that definitions are even clearer than before. This edition includes over two hundred new definitions, words from technology, current events, or popular culture that have only recently become part of our mainstream language, such as “A-list,” “domain name,” and “WMD.” It uses thousands of examples to illustrate idiomatic usage, showing how words and phrases are used in everyday speech. In addition, all irregular noun, verb, and adjectival inflections are spelled out in full, while in-text notes provide guidance on grammar and good usage. All of these features are presented in new layout designed to be as clear as possible, making information easily accessible and the definition you are looking for a snap to find.

    Hands down my favorite dictionary
I’m a U.S. user but prefer this over the still very good Oxford American Dictionary. The paper is opaque, the print is small but very clear, it’s portable (almost 5 in. x 7 in.). Most important, the content is comprehensive. This is my second one: it’s 2024 and it looks like most publishers are no longer printing their dictionaries, instead moving them online. I wanted a nice new copy of this while I could still get it.Other favorites are the smaller (under 4 in. by 6 in.) but beautifully laid out Color OED paperback for occasional use or to carry, and the hefty 2-volume hardcover Shorter OED especially for archaic and obsolete words. As of 2024, the newest edition of the Shorter OED is the Sixth, released in 2007.

    It has all the words.
It’s like the cliff notes version of the multi volume Oxford English Dictionary. Still, it’s more informative than the standard Miriam Webster dictionary

My favorite dictionary of all time.
I have been using this dictionary version for 5 years or so. It has almost every single word I have ever had to look up. By comparison, often I will try to look up 5 words in a row in 2 or 3 other random dictionaries and the words will not be there, but they will be in this one. This is the second copy of this dictionary I have owned, because the first one got water damage. Seriously if you actually want to find your words, get this dictionary.

    Impressed with Amazon’s delivery
I needed 10 copies of the Oxford Dictionary of Current English as I am teaching a course in Kenya leaving very soon. Amazon’s site said they had 4 copies left. They sent me 3 packages of my books. I was impressed with that. I assumed that they went to their own vendors and obtained copies one-at-a time to fulfill my order of 4 books. My husband and I are frequent customers of Amazon. Thank you for being so trustworthy, economical, and efficient in delivery. You are THE best!

    Works for average usage.
I’m a grad student reading a ton of content constantly so I wanted a comprehensive dictionary to reference any new words or phrases I’m learning.Unfortunately, in going through just three of my books, I’ve already found around 10 words that are not listed in this dictionary—most of them having to do with medical, psychological, feminist, and other similar terms. (Ex. There’s no mention of “Allopathy” and “liminal” despite those being relatively common in English.)It’s probably user-error of not knowing what kind of modern English words are not being accounted for in the book. However, I may have to get a more comprehensive version the Oxford dictionary if I continue finding at least 2-5 words for every book I read that’s not listed in this copy.I’m glad to at least have it on hand to look things up casually. I’d say get a better, more comprehensive version if you’re in grad school or higher education!
