Exactly what you think…
It’s a box fan with a filter attached. Its simple and works and maybe it won’t clean the more intense particles from the air but it gets a lot. At level 1 the noise is low, but at levels 2 and 3 it gets loud. Sounds like a little turbine. I don’t mind it because I enjoy the white noise but if you want quiet, this is not it. Still, it works best for getting that outside air inside without adding whatever particles inside. I’m very happy with it and appreciate the simple design that works for what I wanted, the cost can be a downside but you pay for convenience.

Huge filtered Airflow and so much cheaper than other filters
I am an allergy expert since having severe allergies since childhood. Clean air while sleeping is crucial to my health not to mention continuous air cleaning while I am not in my room! These work great and the upgraded version is just as great. Customer of Lasko Filter fans for over 20 years and so glad I can find them again. When I enter my room after the fans have been on all day cleaning the air, its like being on Mt Everest, the air is so clean. Love, love love these units and I can change the filter type to a cheaper one as the seasons change to no pollen, boost to the expensive ones during Cedar Fever and high ragweed times.

I love these, some flaws
I’ve finally relegated my old duck tape filter box fans to the garage. These are great for homes because they look relatively nice. Changing filters is convenient. The clip mechanism feels cheap but they’ve survived.I have four total in my house and they have kept my house free of large dust. Fine dust still settles and needs to be swiffered. Pet hair still needs vacuumed. But during sunsets and rises, there is no dust or pet hair filling the sunlit room.I keep 3 of the 4 on timers and I will regularly switch them off, as they are loud. Two run all night, and the one in my bedroom runs all day. The fourth I leave on all the time because it is a less busy area. They are loud, but it’s something I was able to get used to. The timers make them sort of blend in to all the other house noises (air conditioner, furnace, refrigerator, etc)These are a really smart buy, as they take any standard 20x20x1 filter. They are much less expensive and more flexible than proprietary filters, and they work better as well. You can customize the level of filtration vs airflow. Because they are standard, you will always be able to get replacements and you are not locked in to a single manufacturer who can stop making your model of filter at any moment, all while paying an exorbitant mark up.I have my doubts that lasko specifically engineered a special motor for this like they claim. The mark up on this vs a standard box fan is for people who don’t want to deal with tape.On hard floors, I’d advise putting it on a mat or attaching felt or rubber feet to the plastic feet it comes with. It will rattle on hard floors. The build is a crap shoot but usually will not affect performance. The most recent one from Amazon has grossly misaligned screws holding the front shield in. Another one was missing a screw entirely. But it’s fine. Acceptable.

Makes a Cheap Filter Solution Actually Look Sleek
I bought this combo box fan with filter tray attachment because I’ve actually been doing the DIY version for 5+ years. The DIY version isn’t really that attractive, but it works to circulate moist basement air and clear out the cat dander. I wanted the nice version to put in my guest room/office.I’ve included pictures of both the Lasko fan + filter and my DIY fan + filter as comparison. You can see in my cheap version, I had to carve a hole out of the center back of the filter to make way for the plug. I just bought a cheap box fan from Target during all of the back to school sales. The plug helps keep the filter on, but I’ve seen a lot of people tape the filter to the fan to get it to stay nicely. The most noticeable difference between the Lasko and my DIY is the air throughput. The Lasko on setting 1 still very visibly moves air and feels like a pretty steady breeze. If I want that same feeling on my DIY version, I have to crank it to setting 3. Though the Lasko filter is MERV10 and my DIY version has a MERV14 filter. I assure you, there IS a difference. I will switch to the MERV14 after this fan has had a year of use.I also included a picture of the last time I changed out my MERV14 filter on my DIY solution. That filter actually represents 2 years of use. My box fan is on a timer to run daily from 10am-2pm. So 4 hours a day for 730 days equals out to almost 3,000 hours of runtime. It was pretty filthy. I recommend once a year if you run it as frequently as I do. But many people run theirs all night, so that’d shorten the filter life to more like 6 months.I have 2 long fur cats and frequently keep my windows open rather than use air conditioning. My DIY version has helped tremendously in my basement to cut down stale moist air and cat litterbox smell. People cannot smell my cat boxes even though I only clean them twice a week. My friends who are allergic to cats are 100% fine in my home. I look forward to the nice Lasko version freshening the air in the upstairs of my house too!

Works pretty good. If you need an air purifier on the cheep go with this one, especially when it comes down to replacing the filters. Normal air purifier filters are $40 plus but the ones this one uses can get found at Walmart for $7.The only complaint I have is mine makes a squealing sound from time to time.Does a fantastic job at collecting dust/cat hair etc. etc. etc.

I like that they made a special slot for the filter and it works wonderfully. The air feels lighter the longer it is on. The house is noticeably less dusty. I been doing this for years and glad they invented a nice closed unit that is easy to use. Was easy to setup and use. It puts out a fair amount of air. I keep it on the low setting for hours and move from room to room whenever I feel the rooms need it.
