Great for ESL Students (and everyone else).
As an ESL teacher, this book is great for generating discussion with my advanced students. It is a comprehensive and well organized reference. I have often wondered about the origins of many idioms and even if there is not a definitive answer it is at least fascinating to be presented with the plausible theories.

Don’t bother buying this book !
First , let me say that I rarely ever post a bad review , but I felt , for this set of books , it was needed.I bought the set of both volumes 1 & 2 , as a gift for my husband . I had high hopes , but they were dashed as soon as I received the order . When I opened the book , the print was so light , it was hard for me to read and I don’t even need reading glasses . My husband has poor close up vision and needs not only glasses , but good light , as well ….I knew he would never be able to read this book , even with good light . I will say , that the heading for each idiom was in bold dark print , but everything under it was so pale gray , barely darker than the page color . I called to let Amazon know of the bad printing issue and requested another set of books , hoping that the light print issue would be fixed and that my new order would be readable . I got my second set of books , same issue …unfortunately , I never tried to actually read a couple of the idioms origins , if I had , I wouldn’t have bothered to re order them . These books are garbage…no thought went into writing this book , most likely an AI print copy …No history about each idiom . same format of just basic info for each one , not even understandable , in some cases . If I could have given it 0 stars I would have . Don’t waste your time or money on these !!!

    Basic
Explanations are short and sweet, but informative. Print is small and even with my cheaters on, I need a magnifying glass to read it. Print size is more my issue than the books fault. I just wish that print was bigger so I didn’t get a headache when I read it.

Bought for the information, and for casual reading. Quite good fun to just flick through at random. Gives the meaning, origin, and an example of how it’s used in a sentence. Only downside is the print is quite small, so not that easy to read (even with glasses) if you’re a Senior person!. Would buy again though.

I got this as a present and the feedback has been ‘it’s super interesting! And they’re really enjoying the book’. So I guess that’s a great review in itself.

This is the physical book I’ve bought in a long time. Sooo disappointed that it’s been ‘printed’ in Arial font, or some sans-serif. I would not have bought. I’m not getting any of the others unless I can check that’s not the case. I was really looking forward to a “book’ I could pick up now and then. It if just so unacceptable to have a physical book in sand serif. I don’t care if it’s “needs to be like that for screen/kindle”; then don’t print it, or re-doit. I have never in my life (20th century) picked up a book that was in a sans serif. It’s like a car with wooden tyres, you could, but you just don’t fit good reason. For a physical book this matters in sorry.I’m reducing my review to one star. I agree with another reviewer. It reads like it was written by ai. This book was stored to explain the origin and ‘history’ if these sayings. Show stunner research. In short term me something I don’t know. Instead it just rambles on and waffles on for a pager and just ends up taking a page to achieve what a dictionary manages in four sentences. Should just read “when pigs fly: the occurrence of something that is highly implausible”. Yeah this is not ok. Or “as likely as me buying a physical book unless I can read part of it and see it first”
