Fast forward to digital realism with the HP Z 3D Camera. Turn your display[1] and Windows 10 PC into a versatile capture tool, with 3D object and 2D document capture, as well as live view and video capture capabilities.
For 3D scanning, SLAM Fusion technology creates a 3D digital model in only a few steps. Hold and rotate a scannable object under the camera, as the Camera 3D software tracks and builds a base 3D model in real-time. Base model geometry can be further enhanced or refined in digital sculpting applications, such as Zbrush[2]. A 14.6 MP camera captures high res images of an object’s color texture, that are mapped to the geometry to create realistic texture. The Camera 3D software synthesizes PBR maps with every scan — diffuse color, normal, roughness, and metalness maps. These can be edited in texturing tools, such as Substance Painter[2], to add realism to the scanned object.
There are many objects that do scan well, but not all objects are 3D scannable with SLAM Fusion scanning technology. The included ‘What makes a good scannable?’ chart illustrates characteristics that make an object more compatible with SLAM Fusion scanning. For example, objects like a piece of driftwood or an athletic shoe scan well (rigid, asymmetrical, enough volume, with highly varied color detail), whereas objects like a narrow twig or small toy car do not scan well (not enough volume, with potentially moving parts, thin edges, and/or transparent/shiny/dark surfaces).
[1] Monitor not included. Minimum configuration of Windows 10 64-bit Fall Creators Update (Version 1709), Intel(R) Xeon(R) E3-1200 v3/6th Generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 (or equivalent) Processor, 8 GB DDR4 RAM, 2 GB Disk Space, NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) GTX 760/NVIDIA(R) Quadro(R) M620 (or equivalent) 2GB VRAM, Full HD Monitor (1920 x 1080), 1 x USB 3.0 Type-A port & 1 x USB 2.0 Type-A port (or 1 x USB 3.0 Type-C port for included adapter), internet connection. They tried, I’ll give them that
I bought this right when it came out years ago. Since then there have been such advancements in affordable scanners that absolutely blow this out of the water. HP has surely given up on this endeavor or else we would have seen some updates by now.The idea is strong and great for some industries if its a circular object that needs scanning but in all honesty your i-phone can do much better nowadays.Like I said, they tried getting into the market when it was fresh but ultimately its nowhere near where it needs to be in comparison to the market. Save up your money for something superior or just use your phone.Sorry HP – this was a loss.

Extremely Frustrating
I believe I am a sophisticated user who has had years designing system software.First I had difficulty getting the camera to work since it was not recognized by my Dell computer. I finally connected through the USB ports on the front of the computer ( a process that took about an hour to figure out) and it worked. There was no place that this was recommended by the documentation. The documentation is skimpy and much of it you need to search for on-line. They include a number of scans with the software but I haven’t been able to reproduce anything like what they show or what the show in their marketing videos. The camera is always telling you to move slower and that it has lost tracking. When you do get a scan it is generally incomplete and takes quite a long time to do. Most scans are failures. Support has been non-existent. Calls to support end up in circle where you are told to call a number which then hangs up on you or tells you to call a number where you are referred back to the original number. Often the web site crashes when one makes an inquiry. When the web site works and you enter the serial number to find out your support options, you get spinning wheel of death with no other response. If someone at HP is listening I would very much like to find out how to contact support. At the moment I would say “It just doesn’t work.”

Beyond my expectations (but still not ready for prime time)
I have purchased 3 of these now for a project at work and they work flawlessly for what we need them for. The collaboration with Substance shows HP knows who to work with in the 3D world. Our company has other scanners, some upwards of $30,000 which can produce better results than the “Z” but in terms of speed, interface and usability, this will be the solution we go with. Don’t get me wrong…The results this produces are far from perfect. If your expectations are high, do more research. For $600 and a 3D scan in under 5 minutes, this thing has revolutionized the industry. I will will only get better from here and I feel HP has taken the first step in the right direction.

Comes in a real nice big elegant black matte box
I got my product in a giveaway contest. Comes in a real nice big elegant black matte box. I like that packaging and installation was well thought to be as simple as possible (few items and very few set up steps). I set my camera onto an HP ENVY 17.3″ portable pc. First scan took me a while for me to get used to it, second scan was easier. I recommend to invest a bit more in a 24-27″ monitor to use the full scan range. This is a great family play time toy. I enjoyed very much seeing family bring a series of items to scan, and see their big smiles as they scanned their favorite items. The product comes with a guide as to what can be scanned (easy, difficult, impossible). If in a family play time gathering, test all options and enjoy the challenges and oddness of scanned objects. If in a business environment, stick to the “easy and difficult” recommendations and be creative. I love the product, and I’m excited about the possibilities.

Sounds great on paper, difficult to scan
I was very excited about this product when it was announced. I waited months to get my hands on it. To HP’s credit, the product came well packaged and it was very easy to set up. The instructions were clear. Multiple mounts were included for multiple monitors too. Scanning products proved quite challenging though. I tried scanning a shoe, a tiny camera, and a Death Star Bluetooth speaker orb. No matter how hard I tried, I struggled to get a clear scan.I think the concept has a lot of potential but not sure how practical it is. As others have said, the camera always tells you to slow down and loses its connection. No matter how slow or carefully I moved the object, ended up having issues. The completed scans were not as accurate as I hoped and that is after spending a lot of time to complete them. Hopefully this is just a software issue and can be improved.

Perfect for our needs!!! Fast, easy, impressive result and not expensive at all!
My company has been looking for an easy and affordable solution to speed up the process of reviewing our initial prototypes from overseas. The HP Z 3D Camera has been perfect for this use, not to mention at least 30-60 minutes faster per product than other scanning solutions. In just 3 minutes we can scan a product with full color and textures! In fact we have found that the faster you scan the better the result! You may lose tracking once per scan, but you put it down on the table and pick it up again and you can continue. No need to spend anytime post-processing to match up multiple scan attempts that misaligned. Truly impressive for the low price!
