Beautiful French press with all metal filters
I have been wanting a French press for quite some time. I used to have one a long time ago, and I remember how satisfying it was to brew with it. I’ve considered many different models but could never find one that I really liked–until this one came along. With its chunky bamboo handle, thin borosilicate glass brewing cylinder, and sleek stainless steel sleeve, this press has a modern look and is simply beautiful. I love having it sit on my kitchen counter just to look at.The press is quite heavy, even without any liquid in it, and it feels like a quality product. All of the filters are made of metal. The only plastic on this press is the lid. I wish they had made that of metal, too. The plunger stops about half an inch above the bottom of the brewing cylinder, so there’s no danger of crushing your coffee grounds or tea leaves. The filter system is fine enough to provide good results with coarse grounds, which is generally what’s recommended for French press brewing. It also works great with Yerba mate. The manufacturer recommends that you completely disassemble the unit for cleaning. The glass and the metal filters can go in the dishwasher, but the plastic lid and metal sleeve with the bamboo handle should only be wiped with a soft cloth or sponge. So keeping this thing clean is a bit of a chore. I think taking the glass cylinder out of the sleeve for cleaning is a good idea, but I would disassemble the filter unit only occasionally unless you’re switching between coffee and tea. If you are only brewing one kind of beverage, you can keep the filter system reasonably clean by simply rinsing the whole thing under a strong stream of hot water.I’m a bit of a klutz, and I don’t have a great track record with borosilicate glass. So having to take the glass cylinder out of its sleeve all the time is a bit scary for me. However, I looked around on Amazon, and it appears that the 3.7 x 7 inch cylinder used in this French press is a standard universal design glass beaker that can be replaced easily. Phew!

A BEAUTIFUL French Press! Something you want to leave sitting out. Works well.
Let’s face it. To an extent, most French press coffee makers are fundamentally the same. They have the container (usually borosilicate glass with an outer holder) and the plunger with the filter screen(s) and the spring style ring around the edge to keep the grounds out of the coffee. Various presses will have one, two or three fine mesh screens, and some presses will boast of a dual-layer borosilicate glass container to keep your coffee hotter. This press has two screens and an absolutely beautiful outer metal holder for the glass. The wooden handle adds to the beauty and is easy and safe to hold. As for the screens, I have another press with only one screen and I learned a long time ago keeping grinds out of your cup is just as much about your technique as anything else, so the two screens are plenty. As for heat, I have found this French press produces hotter coffee after a nine-minute brew than my drip coffee maker*.*I have been trying various brew methods, and they all produce slightly different results. The 9-minute idea comes from James Hoffmann’s highly rated “The Ultimate French Press Technique” which you can easily find online, which is:1: 30 grams medium coarse coffee to 500 ml water (I use less grounds for a weaker, but still full bodied brew)2: Leave for 4 minutes3: Mix a bit so the grounds fall to the bottom and then scoop out the foam.4: Let it rest for another 5 minutes5: Carefully pour through the filter, which is set just on top of the water, WITHOUT PLUNGING so as to not stir up everything. There are of course other more standard methods, but this one does make a good cup of coffee. Experiment! The only hard part about a French press is going to be cleaning out the grounds, as you can’t dump grounds into your sink. I often fill the press with water, rinsing off the plunger in the process, and then swirl it out into my compost bin. If I’m not composting, I will pour it out through a reusable coffee filter (from my drip coffee maker) and then scrape it out from the filter into the trash. This annoyance is going to be the same for all French presses. I’ve had no issues with grinds getting caught in the filter of this press, so I’m happy. I can then clean the press with a bit of soapy water, pushing the plunger through the water a couple of times to clean the oils off the plunger.Overall, I love the press. It’s just beautiful. Definitely recommended!
