using it with Roku XDS
I was looking for a 120mm USB fan that I could pair with my older model Roku XDS Streaming Player 1080p.They are the exact same size, so this fan sits on top to pull hot air out of the unit (picture above).The fan is quiet and provides sufficient airflow to keep the Roku cool.I also considered Thermaltake AF0007 Mobile Fan 12 USB Fan * 120 mm Diameter – 4.7 Height x 4.7 Width x 1.0 Depth but decided in favor of this one because:1) The Coolerguys fan has a USB passthrough plug, so you can still connect your external hard drive or other USB device without disconnecting the fan….(Thermaltake instead has a retractable cord).2) The Coolerguys fan has all-black construction and doesn’t stand out from the rest of my equipment….(Thermaltake instead has bare metal attachments).3) The Coolerguys fan comes with 4 rubber feet that you can stick to bottom of the fan when it is mounted horizontally….(Thermaltake instead comes with a vertical stand).4) The Thermaltake fan comes with a speed adjustment knob, but I decided that I didn’t need it because I figured that either fan would already be quiet enough without being slowed down.I also considered buying a standard 120mm computer case fan + USB or wall adapter, but the pricing in either case was comparable to the above.If I could change two things:1) The sticky rubber feet — they are fine if you do not intend to move the device, but a better solution would be one that uses the pre-drilled holes in the corners (such as the rubber pushpins or gaskets that are normally used to reduce vibration when mounted to a computer case). That way you wouldn’t have to worry about the feet falling off and getting lost (happened once during setup).2) fan grill — 1 fan grill included only for the inflow side. A 2nd fan grill for the outflow would be appreciated.———————————————————————————————————Update 02/08/2017 — fan still working, using it now for a cable modem (picture #2)

Coolerguys 120mm USB fan
I just recently got a new desk for my home office which had an enclosed cabinet for the computer tower. Except for a couple 2″ holes for wires to feed through there was no ventilation at all. I had to leave the front door open just to get some air in. So I purchased one of the Coolerguys 120mm fans and mounted it to the top rear of the enclosure to suck out the air, I used a 4-1/2″ hole saw to make the hole. I also installed a 120mm SilverStone fan filter in the lower front side panel of the enclosure after putting a 4-1/2″ hole as well, this is used as an air intake. I can say that this concept works perfect! The fan is plugged into the back of the computer, so it turns on and off with the computer, my only complaint is the USB cord was too short, I can’t pull the computer all the way out of the enclosure without unplugging it. Otherwise the fan is whisper quiet and it keeps the enclosure and the computer case cool to the touch. The CFM of this fan is not listed anywhere, but it must turn the air over in my cabinet at least a couple times a minute with the front door closed.Just a note after I posted this review I went to the coolerguys site and found a fan similar to this one that had a rating of 44CFM. I cannot confirm that it is the same exact fan however. Also the fan I received had the USB splitter on it as some others have mentioned, nice to know when you are limited on USB ports.

Nice fan at a good price
This USB-driven fan worked out perfectly in my cabinet installation. I have a large tower PC inside a kitchen cabinet (along with a wireless router and surge protector unit) that was getting too hot – and making the entire cabinet hot inside. I installed this fan as an exhaust, pulling in intake air around the 1/8 inch gap in the cabinet door perimeter. Now the PC can run all day without getting even warm and the new exhaust fan is quiet. One big advantage with USB-powered fans is you don’t need to switch them on/off when you operate the PC (PC is on, USB-driven fan is on). Mine came with a USB-T connector that would allow you to “intercept” an existing USB device connection if you have no open USB ports. Simply plug the fan’s connector in and then add your other USB device behind it. Too soon to report durability, so I gave it 4 stars and may update this after a few months of daily usage (this PC runs all day every day).Update 8 months later, after operating approximately 14 hours a day: This fan is still working great without issues or excessive noise. I am upgrading my rating to 5 stars.Update at 2 years running: the fan is still quiet and effective. I have since purchased another of the “Cooler Guys” thermostatically controlled fans for my home theatre cabinet, which is also working out well.

Bought this to help cool down a new AVR I had in a cabinet (Harman Kardon AVR 171). Found without the fan the entire cabinet would heat up and the top of the AVR was hot to touch.Tried a couple of cheap laptop fans first and while they helped with the temp, they were just too loud.This on the other hand is all but silent, but still shifts a fair amount of air. Can’t hear it once the cabinet door is closed and can hardly hear it when it’s open. The AVR remains warm but nothing like the temp it used to run at.AVR has a USB port so the fan is only on when the amp is. A high quality, well made fan, absolutely perfect for the task at hand.
