I Only Wish I Got This Sooner!
I made the leap from inkjet to laser with this purchase. This is my first laser printer and I can’t for the life of me figure out why I didn’t switch sooner. I asked my friends on social media what a good inexpensive printer would be for someone like me who doesn’t print much. That’s when a friend said if I don’t print much I should get a laser printer instead because it’s powder instead of liquid ink. I somehow made it halfway through life without ever knowing that! Then I read about how much longer the ink lasts vs inkjet cartridges AND how much more environmentally friendly they are, and I was sold.I was happy to find this Brother for a very reasonable price. My last two printers were Brother and I was always very happy with them, so I was partial to this brand already. I decided to save some much-needed cash and get this monochrome model because I realized that 98% of what I print is black & white text documents anyway. And it’s that much less to buy for refills. It’s actually a pretty small size for a laser printer compared to some models. The footprint is actually slightly smaller than my inkjet printer and only slightly taller. I like the clean, square shape. The unboxing and physical setup went very smoothly, just pop in the included starter ink and it’s ready to go. BUT, I did run into trouble with the wifi setup: It wouldn’t detect/connect to my wifi no matter what I tried. I tried several things and was just getting frustrated when I remembered seeing that someone posted their own instructions in a review that I read. So I went back and found the review and Voila! It was connected and ready in 5 minutes. So I STRONGLY recommend ignoring the installation instructions and ignoring the CD and look for a review here by “Jennifer” who posted a photo of typed step-by-step instructions that pull up the menu and let you prompt the unit to scan for your wifi router, then enter your password and boom: done. I did see one reviewer complain that they had to enter their password the old-school way by cycling through the letters of the alphabet. That is true, but who cares? Not me! Not for this price. Sure, you can get a better menu with more buttons if you spend more, but I am more than happy with this simple model. The print quality is excellent! SO much better than inkjet, I had no idea what I was missing. It just zips out a printout in like one second, it’s amazing. No loud racket of it printing, it’s nice and quiet, the thing is a dream by my standards at least. I will say it’s a little slower to RECEIVE the printing command (from my PC to the point to when it lights up to print) but to be honest, I think that’s my wifi and the position of the printer. My old printer was connected to my PC by a cable, and this new one is wireless and I also have it in a different room from the wifi router unlike the old printer, so I don’t even think it’s an issue with this model, just the result of it being wireless and in a different room from the router.I’m so happy with this printer, especially at this price point. I don’t miss color at all. It’s so quiet and prints such nice fine lines. I wish I realized the difference between inkjet and laser sooner because I should have done this long ago.

Quick setup. Checked all my boxes. Even can be set-up without a PC.
Got a LOT OF PAPERWORK with this printer. Cards about phone apps etc. 3 different warranty sheets. I’ve set up a lot of printers over the years so I had faith that if I could connect it to my WIFI network I’d be done. The quick connect instructions (down loading the software as shown to the PC) had several options. The all wireless approach asked for a user and password. I tried several and couldn’t get it to work. My second try was using a USB cable. That worked great. The printer logged onto my WIFI. Green light came on steady. At least for the initial connection, It’s critical that you follow the instructions and RESTART both your computer and the printer. Power them both completely down. Then power up. The printer logged onto my router and when I looked for the printer on my MacBook Air, the printer was there and showing green idle. I also tried “add a printer” and it did so. I deleted the second one. It printed great. My IPhone also found it (both were logged into my wifi) and it printed from my lPhone. My wife’s WIN11 laptop also connected as expected. It’s not clear if this printer uses a chip in the toner cartridge. Some 3rd party toners say they have them. Loaded the Brother Connect app. Looks like it’s an alternative to using the PC & web site to initially install the printer. Would be good If I didn’t have a PC. Updated the printer’s firmware. Registered it and changed the password. It displays the toner level. Seems to be useful in that it accesses my iCloud files and I can print them from the app – all on my iPhone. However, it’s got lots of ads and IMHO is over-complicated to set up. But, today, more and more people have only a smart phone (no PC) so the app takes care of them well. The toner meter shows its full. If it’s correct, it means Brother included a standard toner cartridge, not one with just a little in it like most other printer manufacturers do.

Don’t buy this, unless you’re an I.T. person
I’ve been in I.T. long enough to remember the HP LaserJet 4 took 1-2 minutes to setup and configure, every time, and that includes setting up the printer share and drivers on a Windows NT 4.0 Server.By comparison, this HL-L2405W printer setup process is a joke. You MUST use their phone app (which never once found the printer for me, even after the printer was setup successfully). The temporary WiFi SSID used to connect to the printer is randomly generated / unique every attempt, and times out after about a minute and shuts off. Since it’s a WiFi that doesn’t have internet access, your phone won’t want to connect to it, you have to force it.During the minute you’re connected, you can access the webadmin page of the printer at 192.168.118.1 to try setting the WiFi info, only to find you are required to change the printer’s password before you can do anything else. The printer’s default password is a randomly generated complex password on the back of the printer. And you have to set a password per Brother’s complexity rules. In under a minute. I’ve tried setting a new password a dozen times, only to get a non-helpful error message about it failing to set the new password. In short, every decision Brother could have made, to make this setup process easy, they choose the opposite.Doing I.T. support professionally, I’ve recommended and installed 100’s of Brother printers over the years, this was BY FAR, the worst setup I’ve ever had to deal with.
