    The Alternate Zone
I recently purchased a 12-string guitar and found that it really comes alive when using alternate tunings. The problem was….. not knowing the proper fingering for chords in those altered tunings! This book really fits the bill for me. It is very comprehensive and well laid out, IMO! If you’re wanting to experiment “away from standard tuning”, this will probably help. Recommended!

    Well done, comprehensive book.
I’m really just scratching the surface but the overall impression is Well Done. This contains much more than pictures of chords. The author delves into Chord construction and theory than is easier to comprehend than other books I’ve read. I’ve done drop D tuning for years, but now I know why it works and have retuned another guitar to open G for experimenting. If you want to know about this stuff, this is a good way to find out. I’m still no rock star – so I’d better go practice now.

Great chord book for the alternative tuners
I’m a guitarist that uses the double drop D tuning a lot and this book has 24 pages of DDD chords and that’s the best I’ve found so far.

    can’t complain… much
Until it arrived, I wasn’t sure what to expect, as I’ve purchased a few chord dictionaries. This is pretty much what it says. It is a complete (or near complete) reference for chords in open tunings. I would like to see a section on common positions for several tunings and tuning groupings with common finger positions that make chords. It could also be expanded to include partial capo chord positions.

    De-Tuning Chord Charts Made Easy
If you’re going to do much with alternate tunings having a reference like this is invalualble. Complete chord charts for a large number of standard and not so standard de-tuned setups for guitar. Very complete and useful – recommended!

Everyone interested in playing guitar needs this.
This covers most of the turnings commonly used. The open tunings are great because they allow you to bar or slide across a fret to get a major chord. Most of the other chords are covered too. I think you will like it.

    a bit disappointed
So far I’ve only experimented with an open minor chord tuning. I found there to be a lack of thoroughness, and I had to think some things through myself and come up with a few of my own chord shapes that weren’t listed here. This book provides a good start in the strange and bewildering world of alternate tunings.

As a chord dictionary this is great but the reason for only 3 stars? In my opinion every different tuning chapter should have a chart of all the most common chords in that tuning. For example, if I’m playing in Open C tuning it’s great to have the 2 pages of C chords, 2 pages of D flat chords etc., but it would be 5 stars if there was a chart of all the most common chords on one or two pages for each tuning so that you don’t have to scour the whole chapter for your next chord.

This includes ten open tunings, drop D, double drop D, Dsus4, open D, open G, Gm, A, E, Em, C and includes 30 common chords in two fret positions on a double page spread for each note in each tuning. The layout seems a bit random starting off with major and minor mixed on each page and variants of 7th dotted about. But having said that, their position is constant throughout the book (m11 always on last column on second row on second page). This is very clear and a good starting place to explore open tunings. My first copy fell apart due to faulty binding but was quickly replaced by amazon.

Well, this is for someone who don’t want to spend their time figuring out the chords theoretically. I think it’s awesome because I’m older now and it speeds things along for me. It’s layed out pretty good, just work with and you will be playing chords in whatever tuning you choose quickly. With the money.
