Another great Dover language phrase book.
I just started studying German a couple of weeks ago using the Pimsleur CD system. I have been using this book for only a few days. This book has excellent representations of not only the sounds used in German, but also how to accent words and phrases. This book has plenty of useful and usable phrases to expand vocabulary and build confidence. The organization makes finding what you want very easy without overwhelming the student. I was very pleasantly surprised at how up-to-date the book is. By using this book along with the Pimsleur system my ability to start to think in German really took off. It is hard to learn using only a book, but once the pronunciation is gained from the Pimsleur system, this really helps to accelerate the learning curve. The format is larger than pocket phrase books, but that makes it easier to read and more relaxing and comfortable to use. The phrases are easy to find and use because they are not crammed together.

    Decent little book
Bought this as a gift for family traveling to Germany & Austria. It covers quite a bit of material, but sticks to the basic words/phrases you will need for a short trip for the most part. I would recommend that you, of course, read this and practice well before your trip as well as utilize Google Translate for additional phrases you might need. Maybe attach a little notebook to this and write some of those down.

    Handy little book
This small book is exactly what I wanted. It is not a complete German course, just a handbook of common words and sentences. Each chapter offers words and short sentences on a specific topic – food, lodging, trains, shopping, health, etc. Below each sentence is a phonetic pronunciation making it easy to speak the phrase. I appreciate the appendix which explains typical sentence structure – it will help me make less of fool of myself. Most entertaining were the pages of idioms, slang and proverbs! Its small 5 x 8 (approx) size will make it convenient to throw into my daybag while traveling. The problem however with all of these kinds of books is that they help you ask a question, but not how to understand the answer. This book would have been a perfect addition to the adult education class I was planning to take. Alas, not enough people signed up so I’ll have to blunder through my trip with this book and my language class from 44 years ago!

More useful than all the other phrase books I’ve seen
My son and his family live in Austria, so I have a real incentive to learn and use German. I’ve been learning German with the aid of the Pimsleur CD-based course (recommended by the way) and had reached the point where I was more confident about including more phrases into what I had learned while traveling. I was very disappointed in the Rick Steves book, so, I determined I would check out ALL the phrase books in the Houston Library before buying another. Of the three others I looked at, this book was the only one I felt had really useful phrases, especially for the traveler. In the moment, how many of us have time to dig out a booklet, look up a phrase then use it? I feel Professor Wolf’s booklet helps a traveler learn the phrase by putting it into context better than the others. I could also integrate the phrases more easily into what I had already learned with Pimsleur. Recommended.

    Decent price for any book
Yup, lots of easy phrases, just not sensible ones you might need traversing around the country. Good thing Germany teaches English in their schools.

Super book to improve your speaking of German
I would give this book a hundred stars!I have started to learn German but so much is not phonetically done. This book took my learning to a new level. Very beginner book, but I needed it to get moving faster in my studies I already had done.
