UPDATE: 10-6-12They just updated this dictionary, and it’s both far deeper in terms of the sheer number of words, as well as the number of definitions for each word. I’m finding that several words I looked up two days ago, but weren’t available, are now there. There are also additional synonyms and phrase usages in the dictionary overall. It’s beyond me how the original version drew so much criticism, but anybody complaining at this point should be seen as untrustworthy. It’s an amazing tool, and again, at $7.00 it has to be the best buy I’ve ever made to build my Spanish. Let it also be known that I’m no longer just an advanced learner, but a person who now makes his living through languages. I’m currently reading authors like Umberto Eco, Ishiguro and Fowles, and although the most esoteric words are still occasionally missing, the overall content and layout is incredibly impressive.ORIGINAL:Many of the criticisms regarding this dictionary are true, but need to be taken with a grain of salt. The dictionary has a great number of advanced words, in addition to basic words, but yes, it’s not yet fully realized. With that said, the quick ability to move a cursor over any word that you want to learn, or, just as importantly, reinforce or verify (words you kind of know) is one of the great advancements in technology for a language learner. If some of the other reviews are making you hesitate, don’t. For under $7.00, this is the single most indispensable book you can purchase. It’s a must have to accompany the kindle for Spanish learning. And, although you will be disappointed from time to time because it lacks the third or fourth definition that you need, or lacks the word altogether, it’s more than forgivable due to the incredible amount of time saved in seeing the other 90% of words that do exist. I’ll be even happier when a more comprehensive version comes out, but considering that such an option didn’t even exist a short time ago, I’m thrilled with this purchase.

Best for now…but not without its flaws
For anyone who is reading Spanish books on Kindle and needs the occasional help with translation, this dictionary is what many of us have been waiting for! It can be set as the default dictionary so that you can click on Spanish words in text and receive a direct English translation! A wonderful product for that feature alone. Gone are the days of having to put down your book, pick up a dictionary, and flip through it to find the definition. I always found that extremely disruptive when reading a book in a foreign language.Now, despite the great convenience this dictionary has brought to my Spanish reading life, it’s not without its flaws as has been well documented in these reviews. This is clearly the first run of a work-in-progress and hopefully future editions will improve upon it. However, I can also tell you that I spent a LOT of time researching Kindle Spanish-English dictionaries and this is the best available right now, none of the other dictionaries are without these same flaws. If you know of one, please let me know in the comments so that I can buy it! I am gladly willing to be proven wrong on this point.The most noticeable problem is with verb conjugation. Sometimes conjugated verbs simply won’t show up at all and that’s frustrating. Other times conjugated verbs will come up as nouns. For instance “corro” came up as “ring” instead of “I run.” The other thing is that when it does pick up the verb from conjugation, it will give you the English definition in the infinitive. So when you look up a word like “sufrí” it will give you the definition of “sufrir” as “to suffer” and it’s up to you to conjugate it as the first person past tense “I suffered.”While these setbacks are annoying, I think the reviews are somewhat harsh. To begin with, if you can’t be bothered to take the time to conjugate verbs from the infinitive and translate them yourself, then you’re honestly never going to learn Spanish anyway. I know we live in a technological age where we expect out machines to do everything for us, but for something like learning a language it requires some effort on your own part. To that extent, I don’t remember ever owning a physical Spanish-English dictionary that had verbs in anything other than the infinitive, which left you with the task of discerning the infinitive from the conjugated verb yourself. To that extent this Kindle dictionary removed one more step for you by identifying the infinitive. Regardless, if you open the dictionary itself (i.e. not just using it as the default dictionary in-translation tool for a Spanish book) it has an entire section on verb conjugation that can aid you in conjugating to the proper tense.So, there you have it. It’s not perfect, but it’s certainly not terrible. For starters, I’ve found it infinitely more useful than having to lug around two books – the Spanish book I’m reading and the dictionary – and flip between them. Another reason why digital is the future for all media. However, be forewarned that it’s certainly not perfect and there will be times when you find yourself frustrated, and perhaps relying on Google translate or even those good ‘ol fashioned paperback translation tools. Nonetheless, this is a giant step in the right direction and I’m hopeful that these dictionaries will become more refined as time goes on!

A search option should search the book, whether it is a dictionary or novel
This dictionary has been useful when I had a specific Spanish word to look up. But for browsing or when I don’t know the spelling, it is not useful at all. I am partially deaf and can’t distinguish consonants, and so don’t always know how to spell words that I hear. There is no backwards look up either, so finding the Spanish word for an English word is impossible (unless there is some secret way that is not intuitive.)On my Kindle Keyboard, the search function lists the words and so if I am not sure of the spelling, then it lists the Spanish words near the word I search for, and then I can correct for spelling. On the iPod Touch, if I can’t spell the Spanish word exactly, then I get no results.On the Kindle Keyboard, the search option takes me to the part of the dictionary close to the word I searched for, so at least I am near what I am looking for if I don’t know the spelling. The Kindle search on the iPod Touch does not.The Table of Contents on both the Kindle Keyboard and the iPod Touch do not have an entry for each letter of the alphabet (only “Dictionary Entries A-Z).. So, there is no way to get to the beginning of the ll’s, say, without trial and error.Worst of all, there is no backwards translation; only Spanish to English. I assumed that if I searched for an English word, that search function would take me to the location of that word in the book just like it does for a novel. But no. At a minimum, the Kindle Keyboard takes me to the part of the dictionary as if I’m looking up the English word in the entries, not the definitions.I was hoping to be able to use the iPod touch in restaurants and stores in Spanish-speaking country, but words are not always spelled correctly on menus, and without the backward translation, it has been of very little help there.

This dictionary is superb. The best I have come across. However I prefer the earlier edition the DEB 1470U because I could carry it around with me so easily. It would fit into even a shirt pocket. The DBE 1510 is too big for convenient use. In fact I am trying to locate another DBE 1470U and if anyone has one for sale I would buy it. It is about time this superb dictionary was really miniaturized sufficiently to make it very easy to fit into a pocked without feeling bulky.

Al agregarlo al Kindle como traductor, no traduce los tiempos verbales (por ejemplo, con ‘wrote’ te pone ‘pasado de write’, en lugar de ‘escribió’. Con lo que si quieres averiguar más has de salir de la lectura para hacer otra consulta. Sería menor que pusiera ‘ pasado de write, (escribir)’ o algo así.

habe eben damit mein erstes spanisches buch auf dem kindle gelesen.da ich englisch perfekt kann,spanisch etwas weniger perfekt,lasse ich mir die wörter aus dem buch,die ich auf spanisch nicht kenne, einfach mit einem einzigen curserclick auf das wort vom spanischen ins englische übersetzen.genial.ich bleibe somit ohne unterbrechung fliessend im text des buches,kein externes ,dickes wörterbuch auf dem tisch nebenan mehr nötig!die spanisch-deutsche version gibt es meines Wissens leider nicht,also englisch sollte man hierfür daher schon können.nach der Bestellung über den kindle shop müssen Sie dieses Wörterbuch unter Einstellungen im Kindle als Ihr hauptwörterbuch einstellen,sonst funktionert es nicht ,dies also bitte nicht vergessen nach dem 1 click-kauf!;)

I am regulary using the dicctionary and find it very useful and worth the money. Unfortunately a lot of words are missing – so there is some room for improvement.
