The writers of the Bible, like any other authors, were dependent on a vast array of literary sources from their timeā€•the ancient world. Many of these documents are tragically lost, but what remains provides insight into the voluminous, fascinating, complex, and dynamic literary world that shaped the expressions of faith found in the Old and New Testaments. Part of these extant sources are known as the Pseudepigrapha. This collection of Jewish and Christian writings shed light on early Judaism and Christianity and their doctrines.

This landmark 2-volume set includes all 65 Pseudepigraphical documents from the intertestamental period that reveal the ongoing development of Judaism and the roots from which the Christian religion took its beliefs. A scholarly authority on each text contributes a translation, introduction, and critical notes for each text. Edited by James H. Charlesworth, The Old Testament Pseudepigrapha includes contributions from E. Isaac, B. M. Metzger, J. R. Mueller, S. E. Robinson, D. J. Harrington, G. T. Zervos, and many others. Originally published by Yale University Press, the leading critical translation of these ancient texts is now available from Hendrickson Publishers in paperbackā€•and at a fraction of its original price.

Available in a two-volume set, or as individual volumes:
Two-volume set: ISBN 9781598564891Volume 1: 9781598564914Volume 2: 9781598564907
Volume 1 contains ā€œApocalyptic Literatureā€ and ā€œTestamentsā€ that reflect a wildly varying trend towards apocalypticism in ancient Judaism. Yet, despite the existence of this movement on the fringe of Judaism, the movement maintained a definitive influence, and produced amazing, if not disturbing, literary expressions. There can be no doubt that these writings shaped the apocalyptic imagination of the biblical authors and helped to shape the way early Christians interpreted the promised return of Jesus Christ.

If the contents of Volume 1 were not enigmatic enough, Volume 2 is, arguably, even more cryptic in its contents featuring expansions of the Hebrew Bibleā€•legends and wisdom literature, prayers and psalms, and fragments of lost works. While these works are not so imaginative as Volume 1, they do much to aid our understanding how the religious life of Judaism was lived and practiced in the ancient world, after the Old Testament closed and Christianity began to emerge.

As a unit, the two volumes, like no other collection of texts available, illuminates the literary, social, religious, and theological context in which the Bible was shaped. They are an indispensable tool providing great insight into how religion functioned and how it was expressed in both official and unofficial circles.

Editor James H. Charlesworth is the George L. Collord Professor of New Testament Language and Literature and director of the Dead Sea Scrolls Project at Princeton Theological Seminary, New Jersey. He also directs the Syrus Sinaiticus Project at St. Catherineā€™s Monastery in Sinai. Charlesworth is a world-renowned translator, particularly of pseudepigraphical material, and the author of Jesus and the Dead Sea Scrolls, The Bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls, The Serpent: A Symbol of Life or Death? and The Historical Jesus.

Best purchase to add to my library of Hebrew Scripture letters.
I’m so happy, I purchased and completed reading all the contents of Volume 1 of the Old Testament Pseudepigphra. Not only do I like been able to go through the missing books of the scriptures and extra books which have an interesting relation to the cannonical books. The author’s introduction pages of each book provide details of text, original language, date, provenance, historical and theological importaance, relatioship to cannical and apocryphal books, and cultral importantce. His notes in each page takes workload off of the the etemology research readers who go into the Hebrew strongs to translate the writings to it early language of Aramaic since you will get more on some books such as Enoch and Testament of the 12 Patriarchs to name a few examples. In addition his notes give a heads up on some books having indication of Christainity doctrine tampering, hellenized tampering, and notes which contradictory surface when compared to the standard 81 books of certain accounts since as timing of events, age of figures in the scriptures, and bloodline relationships. This book involves alot of studying but is a worthwhile scholar journey.

    LIFE CHANGING
This would be the 4 time since the 1980 I bought this book. I have volume 1 & 2 and have read volume 1….. 4 or 5 times. It changed my life especially the books of Enoch’s NO MAN COULD WRITE THESE BOOK’S. The Life of Adam and Eve, WOW …Testament of Solomon not for the faint of heart This book will shake you up I LOVED IT BECAUSE I BELIEVE IT…But very scary for most to see how the devil and his cohorts work. I understand most people do not believe there is a devil but yet they do not know where there thoughts come from. They think its them because it’s in there mind. Not knowing the fight is between good and evil and something GOOD OR EVIL IS ALWAYS WHISPERING in you mind. Your words and thoughts have power. You will follow one or the other. You will fight to get to heaven. You can tell a man did not write this alone. A lot of Jewish info and Christian, but you need to know that some books in here are not true or real and have nothing to do with the Jewish/Christian God. That’s why is called Pseudepigrapha because they mix some true books with fake books. I can tell you these books give me so much power and understanding on the Bible.I already knew the Bible very well and new it was true, but what these books did for me was put me in My Father God’s Arms….and help me in the mad evil world, it helped me understand why so much evil is here and so much love.

    Readable
I’m enjoying reading the different books. Sadly, it doesn’t have the Apocalypse of Moses in it.

” This book represents a good portion of what was “left out” of the Holy …
Ever wonder how the Biblical Cannon was constructed? The Council of Nicea in A.D. 325, under the auspices of the final Roman Emperor/first Christian Pope, conveigned to — among other issues — decide which of the sacred texts extant to Christianity would become “Official.” This book represents a good portion of what was “left out” of the Holy Bible, paints a broader picture of Mankind’s early days, and — most importantly — would have been common knowledge to Spiritual leaders, up to and including Jesus Christ. Do not pass up the opportunity to know something the masses do not. SOMETHING brought you here, now, to these words. Act upon it, now.

Bought for the Book of Enoch, translated from Ge’ez, where Ethiopian Jews have kept it alive.
Bought for the Book of Enoch, translated from Ge’ez, where Ethiopian Jews have kept it alive. I don’t care about the commentary, but it’s a good way to get the book, if you want it in print.

just to say this book contains amongst it’s many apocrypha, 3 Enoch, the translastion is good even if they drop a letter or two in the names (in my opinion). P Alexander uses the word “prostrate” instead of worship, when the angels payed honer to one higher then themselfs, which is very good as the lord says “worship The Lord and I alone”. just the 3 Enoch section has really good bonus stuff, like it is acompanyed with the acencsetion of Moses, and its forward is execelent giving you a history of the work. on another subject, i feel that amazon should list the contents of books (on the book info page), especally books that contain full texts such as books that contain apocrypha, woulnd’nt that be handy? if you think so contact them and say so…oh and rest of the book has had much care and attention payed to it as well, very worth the money! a bargin!Dava.

A title I’d been looking for for ages, only I didn’t know it. This along with volume 2 contain the collection of books not included in the old testament. Must read for biblical scholars.Front pages contain the contents pages for the books in both volumes – coloured differently. Footnotes are highly extensive and informative.
