The ScanSnap SV600 is an overhead style contactless scanner that provides a new perspective on document scanning. Unlike the typical scanner, you can easily scan newspapers, magazines, books or documents of up to 30mm thick directly with the overhead LED, without cutting or damaging them. You can scan a document larger than A4 size by simply positioning it on the A3 scan mat and pressing the scan button. Because there is no need to cut documents or feed each document through the rollers, your important and delicate documents such as valuable books, hand-painted pictures and photos can be scanned without getting damaged. The Multi Document Detection function enables you to scan multiple business cards, photos, newspaper clippings or other documents in one scan, automatically cropping and rotating the scanned images. (Up to 10 documents can be scanned at one time.) Combining high quality CCD optics and advanced LED illumination, the scanner produces a steady image of the whole document, minimizing the unevenness or blurriness even when scanning from a distance. The ScanSnap SV600 is your ultimate partner to scan books or magazines efficiently, providing various useful functions specially designed for book scanning.

Fantastic for my specific use case
I am using this scanner for something it was probably not targeted for, scanning graded comics and trading cards encapsulated in plastic holders. The CCD optics is the same technology as older flatbed scanners that provide a clear scan despite the reflective cases. Modern flatbed scanners provide blurry images. This is expensive but perfect for my needs to catalog my collection and list for resale. Easy to use and works with latest version of MacOS. I went with this over the no name Chinese versions being sold on Amazon. Quality build and believe it will last a long time.

I love this thing
I am in the process of digitizing everything that I can. I have a scan snap document scanner and it works great but obviously it would not work for books or other bulky items and was not great for photos. Since I really liked the way Scan Snap works I purchased the Scan Snap SV600. I love it. It was just as easy to set up as the document scanner and is just as easy to operate. After watching a You Tube video I did purchase a clear acrylic sheet from the hardware store to hold the books down (no more fingertips in the scan) The scans are clear, the software works great and I am very happy with the purchase.

Fujitsu SV600 Overhead Book Scanner
I like the Fujitsu Overhead scanner for large magazines and book scans. The scanner works well for quick scans but needs improvements in the software as others have suggested. The quality of the scans varies and requires some manipulation of the pages to get quality scans. I use a plexiglas sheet to hold down book pages when clarity is important. Anyone who uses this Overhead scanner will need Adobe Acrobat DC to make corrections. I believe Adobe Acrobat DC now comes with the Fujitsu Overhead scanner for one year of use; thereafter it cost $180.00 per year. Using your fingertips to hold down the pages of a book while scanning is not a good method because the software included with the scanner can only remove fingertips from scans one page at a time.

poor control, incapable of consistent results. Hatred for this product grows as I use it.
Just got started, but a bit disappointed that I don’t seem to have control over things like resolution, or even ability to turn OFF the page turn detection mode and scan a page at a time at the pace I need to.first impression very promising product, very limited software.update – I’ve been using the scanner a bit more, and am more convinced that it is the software that I do not like. I am having trouble getting consistent results because there seems to be some sort of automated cropping going on, which is making a hash of my scans despite meticulous placement efforts. This is COMPLETELY unnecessary. Just stop “thinking” and follow instructions. They don’t even have a twain driver, which would at least allow better software to make use of the scanner. I’m taking it down to 1 star – that’s what’s deserved when my work efforts are being wasted. Don’t buy it, get something better.Update – I actually went to the trouble of making a rigid layout plate, coped to the base of the scanner and perfectly centered. I included layout lines to ensure I had perfect placement of each page. Still, the program’s “intelligence” insists on not scanning the area as I had specified, but rather choosing the layout as it would choose (decidedly off-center). Again, COMPLETELY unnecessary.Somebody at Fujitsu needs to understand the concept of consistent results. Honestly.I want to like this product, but the amount of re-scanning and wasted work involved precludes that. No matter how perfectly I place each page, I ALWAYS get a large percentage of random scan areas. I can not understand how this POS cannot simply keep its eyes in one spot and do its job.Probably the last Fujitsu product I buy. Every use makes me think less of its makers.update – they updated the software. Aaaaaaaaand…… its still a piece of trash.

This is great for scanning large photographs and old newspapers. Easy to make edits and the images look great.

Great device, but the software ruins it
Unfortunately, this is going back. The idea and execution of the hardware are great, but the software ruins the whole deal. You can’t use any other software other than the one that they include, because this is not a TWAIN scanner. The specific problems with the software are that when doing finger removal, you have to do it a page at a time. It doesn’t automatically detect and remove them as some competitors do.Another problem is that when scanning a book, sometimes the detection of the pages gets messed up, and you can’t tell this until after you have clicked finish scanning. When you scan a chapter at a time, this often results in a number of pages in the middle of the chapter being unusable and you have to rescan them. If I somehow knew that immediately and could rescan that page, it wouldn’t be that big a deal. Sometimes, the entire chapter will wind up unusable. This is a major time-waster, again from what I understand some competitors (namely the CZUR ET18 Pro, which I bought to replace this, but haven’t received it yet) can show you live previews of how it will crop the image. This is understandable, as the other devices are document cameras and not scanners. I thought that this being a scanner would increase the quality, but at the price of ease-of-use and having to do a bunch of post-processing manually, it is not worth it.

I have been using this to scan older magazines to start with. It has worked excellent. The software straightens out curved pages (when it doesn’t lay perfectly flat) and the OCR works effectively. It will automatically scan after I remove my hands after flipping the page. One drawback that others noted is that if you mess up a page within multiple pages you cannot edit one page. You would have to rescan the whole group. Not a deal breaker just a consideration.Once you get the hang of it, it goes smoothly. It picks up the edges of the pages well and only a few times I had to individually edit the edge locations of pages. I used the included black base mat when scanning and I feel that helps in accuracy. The included software was outdated for my Mac. It auto updated the software right away so no problem. It is a heavy solid feel and is easy to use. It is faster than a flat bed for when you have lots of scanning.

Generally I am pleased with the product. It allows me to scan documents larger than 8 1/2 by 11 inches in one image.Like any new to me product, it took some time to get used to the order in which I have to choose options options for scanning and choosing the best options to ensure the best scanning process/image.The black background sheet does eliminate most “bleed through”.However, to get the best copies, it is important that the pages being scanned are as flat as possible. When scanning books, I have found that by placing supports under the side of the book with fewest pages generally makes the document (pages) to be scanned to be “level” and better results are obtained.I do find it frustrating that jpeg cannot scan in BW, but an inconvenience not a complete barrier. The speed of scanning, getting the image I need is great.I am also generally pleased that it will scan documents placed under glass, plastic sleeve protections, etc.As I am often dealing with over-sized as well as “historical” documents, not always of today’s standard sizes and often fragile, the versatility this product is great.Like any technology it is not suitable for all scanning needs (eg. negatives and positives).I am impressed with the product and its results, and would recommend it to those involved in the above mentioned needs.Edward
